Welcomes submissions to the thematic on 'ROS and abiotic stresses'. The topic of the issue is of great and general interest in many parts all over the world as abiotic stresses are common threat globally. Different abiotic stresses have devastating effects on plant growth, production and distribution in many areas of the world. The abiotic stress implications on crop yields conflict with the increasing demand for food because of elevating population all over the world. ROS are generated by abiotic challenge-inducing oxidative stress as a secondary stress. ROS have injurious effects as they attack cellular proteins, membrane lipids and nucleic acids and eventually leading to cell death. ROS are not just damaging the cellular macromolecules, but they are implicated in a plethora of physiological processes in plants from seed germination to cell death. They exert beneficial effects acting as signaling molecules in a broad range of adaptive and developmental responses. ROS can also play a crucial role as regulators of numerous stress-responsive genetic networks. Because of the crucial importance of both elements, i.e. abiotic stresses and ROS, of this special issue, the papers submitted to this issue will cover the topic in terms of damaging and beneficial impacts of ROS under different abiotic stresses, e.g. water deficit, salt stress, freezing and chilling stress, high temperature stress … etc. Manuscripts addressing enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that scavenging ROS and thus play key roles in plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses should be also welcomed in this special issue.
